The famous
Douglas horse trams run the whole length of the promenade from
the ferry terminal to Derby Castle, where the Manx Electric
starts.
This is the horse tram depot and offices at Derby Castle (May
29th 1979).
Open toastrack 38 at speed
on the promenade.(May 29th 1979).
No.38 is one of a batch of three cars (38-40) supplied by GF
Milnes in 1902.
Covered toastrack 46 (May
29th 1979).
No.46 was supplied by GC Milnes, Voss in 1909.
Winter saloon 27 (May 29th 1979).
One of a batch of three cars (27-29) supplied by GF Milnes in
1892. The platform vestibules were added in 1895.
The only surviving double
decker is no.14. Originally built for South Shields in 1883, it
was sold to Douglas in 1887 after the South Shields line was
closed.
This car was originally no.13, but was was renumbered to 14 when the original 14 was wrecked by a rock fall at the depot in 1908.
It was withdrawn from service in 1939, and eventually went to the Museum of British Transport at Clapham. It returned to Douglas in 1976 for the centenary of the horse tramway.
